WELCOME

I have been fortunate to work for two fine universities. In 2001, I joined the Women's Studies Department at San Diego State University, where my final role was department chair. Previously, during 28 years at the University of Delaware, I moved from part-time lecturer to Professor of English and was active in the formation of Women's Studies.

My earliest work probed the Irish literary contexts of James Joyce, including the feminism and nationalism of his day. I remain interested in colonial and post-colonial modernisms, some of my latest work relating to Australia. My scholarship for over two decades has facilitated the feminist re-vision of literary modernism.

Lately I have been pursuing a lifelong interest in the environment, expressed in my most recent book, In the Hollow of the Wave: Virginia Woolf and Modernist Uses of Nature (2012). This, I hope, will contribute to the greening of modernism, and indeed of our way of life. "Retirement" brings continuing writing challenges, lecturing engagements, and the opportunity to serve the community in new ways.
